Inchicore (Irish: An Chuirchean) is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. It lies south of the River Liffey. It was formerly part of Dublin County Council, in the county of Fingal.
History
Early history
Archaeological remains of Neolithic people have been found in Inchicore, where there is evidence of a settlement in the area from around 4000 BC. The Neolithic settlement consisted of a series of 3 houses, with the remains of a crannóg, or roundhouse, on a promontory at the north end of the Inchicore Liffey docklands.
The name Inchicore, meaning "the narrow harbour", may have been derived from the narrow inlet where the houses were situated. This may also be the source of the name Inchichelly, meaning "the harbour of Inchicore".
The earliest Irish version of the name 'Inchicore' appears in Lebor Gabála Érenn (Book of Invasions).
The Irish name Inchichelly is an anglicisation of the Gaelic name, which is in turn a generalisation of the anglicised Irish name Íthichell.
Numerous ancient and prehistoric sites exist on the Inchicore Peninsula:
Crannóg (hill fort)
Crannóg beach
Inchicore Liffey docklands
Inchicore Castle
Glashaboy Castle
Geography
The area is primarily residential, and is located between Blackhall Place to the north, Tallaght to the south, Castleknock to the east and Inchicore railway station to the west.
There is a strong Gaelic Athletic Association presence in the area. The Inchicore St. Enda's GAA club was formed in 1907 and still plays in the Fingal Intermediate Championship. The Inchicore Dragons was formed in 1961.
Development
From the 1960s onwards, Inchicore, due to its location on the Liffey River, grew rapidly, both in terms of size and population. The area is now almost entirely residential, with the largest remaining commercial area being the Seacroft Shopping Centre, located on the southern fringe of the area, at
